RECs in Europe

Role of RECs:

The main role of research ethics committees (RECs) is to address ethical challenges common in health-related research, especially those frequently identified in drug trials and trials of medical devices. Ethics review ensures that research is conducted ethically, safeguarding the rights and well-being of participants.

Broadened Scope:

Recognising the dynamic nature of research, RECs in Europe are expanding their mandate. Beyond the biomedical field, they actively engage with ethical considerations in social sciences, humanities, and emerging technology research.

EUREC's Vision:

EUREC takes a progressive stance, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among RECs reviewing research from diverse disciplines. EUREC envisions a future where ethical oversight adapts to the multifaceted challenges presented by contemporary research.

In pursuit of this vision, EUREC is committed to extending its focus beyond health-related research. This broader focus is driven by the understanding that all types of research could benefit significantly from ethical review.
